Kilkenny is a little gem tucked away in southeast Ireland. Most of the tourists who come to Ireland go to the west coast for its beauty, but Kilkenny shouldn’t be missed! It’s a beautiful city that has lots to do but also has the small-town Irish feel to it.
Kilkenny is home to Ireland’s oldest brewery, has a lovely walk along the River Nore to explore, and has a Medival Castle. It is also the home of hurling! Hurling is a sport hard to explain, so finding a match to watch while you’re in town is something you must do.
Another great part of Kilkenny is that there are so many day trips that you can take from the town. Tramore has a beach that is 30 minutes away, as well as other big cities in the southwest to explore-Waterford and Wexford. But you can’t miss this charming town!

Kilkenny Castle
This gorgeous castle was originally built in the 12th century. It’s been added to and changed over time, but the beauty can’t be matched. It’s set right next to the River Nore. There is a huge yard adjacent to the castle and walking trails along the river. It’s breathtaking.
Smithwick’s Brewery Experience
Ireland’s oldest brewery can be found in Kilkenny! The tour and factory were closed for renovation and recently reopened and the new tour is amazing! They make it simple to understand all of the different types of beers and what makes Smithwicks (pronounced Smit + icks) so unique. Plus at the end you get a pint. Always a bonus.
St. Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower
This beautiful church and round tower can’t be missed while visiting. The church was established in the 6th century. The best part of the tour, if you’re up for it, is the climb to the top of the Round Tower. If it’s a nice day, you can see for miles in every direction.

The Hibernian
The Hibernian is a recommended hotel right in the city center. You’ll be able to walk to your hotel and to the sights. (B&B plan-ahead rate is currently as low as $64/person or $78 room, breakfast included).
High-Budget: Hotels
Lyrath Estate Hotel and Spa
A beautiful hotel with an amazing spa. However, this hotel is outside the city center, so you will need to use a cab or car to reach it. (Rooms running about $130 as of 3/2015).
Kyteler’s Inn
It’s definitely the Irish Pub that everyone thinks about. The building it’s in has been around since the 13th century. Amazing fish n chips and if it’s nice outside, sit outside in the beer garden!
Langtons
Langtons has an amazing Sunday dinner if you’re around on the weekends. But if you’re not, it’s a great place for some craic (good times in Irish!) and drinks any night of the week. The reason that I love Langtons, though, is because of a certain desert. It’s Baileys and Brown Bread Ice Cream with homemade caramel sauce. It’s even more amazing than it sounds.
Kilkenny Design Center
This great store is right across the street from Kilkenny Castle. The entire shop is full of authentic Irish gifts. There is amazing pottery, wool blankets and sweaters, and all types of jewelry. If you’re looking for the perfect Irish trinket, this is the spot to get it.
- Right outside of Kilkenny City are a few places worth visiting. Nicholas Moss Pottery in Bennettsbridge has amazing homemade pottery that you can even watch being made. The café upstairs has amazing scones, too.
- Jerpoint Abbey is a gorgeous ruin of an abbey. The ruins located in Thomastown are definitely worth visiting.
