As we trekked toward Annecy, France, in our little automatic rental car, we knew another “first” was coming in this trip. Some of our group had never stayed in a hostel before.
Those girls were understandably worried. Although Kristian and I have had many amazing experiences at hostels over the years, the only insight these girls had was from the movie hostel – and that was terrible. I crossed my fingers that their first experience would be a good one.
We rolled into town and pulled up at the Annecy Hostel. There was good news and bad news: they were renovating. The good news was that they had an entire new building that was being completed. We would have a two-story building pretty much to ourselves. The bad news was that the construction was running two days behind, so a few of the finishing touches weren’t completed yet. (Including the individual room locks).
We shrugged our shoulders and moved the luggage into the hostel. The girls, being the resourceful travelers that they were, daisy-chained their bicycle locks and used them as door locks, just in case. I’m sure the hostel owners had never seen anything like us as customers.
The hostel was owned by two brothers, Drieu and Alexandre. They had bought and renovated it over the past couple of years.

That night, the unexpected happened. Annecy, France, was in the middle of an unexpected cold snap….and the heater broke. I don’t mean that a little room heater broke, I mean the entire two-story building went out.
I hardly ever pass judgment on a place by the unexpected that happens – I judge it more by how the managers react to it. And these managers absolutely did the best they could. We kind of felt sorry for them. No repair companies could come for two days. So the first night was spent with extra blankets and every electric space heater the owners could find.
We ended up with a discount and this outside our door!
So although the first hostel for the girls turned out to be a bit of a bumpy experience, Kristian and I would definitely go back. The owners were friendly and attentive, and this place will be great once renovations are completed.
This sounds like a great hostel. I’d stay here. Sounds like the owners really did all that they could to make you guys comfortable 🙂

Yes – things happen unexpectedly on trips. Or just in general. But if I know that the owners are working hard to provide good customer service, I know that I can feel confident in recommending them. Besides, it was a pretty crazy string of circumstances 🙂
I can’t say that I’ve had any sort of crazy experience like this in my experience staying at hostels- but hostels are all about unexpected adventures, right? I think that this was a great article that showed the hostel in good light despite the temporary difficulties. You convinced me to include this hostel on my potential lodging for my backpacking through Europe trip! Thanks!
Haha in all honesty, this is the least of some of our crazy experiences with lodging. We’ve had fire alarms to missing reservations, to some very interesting people. But that happens in any level of lodging – cheap or expensive. Unplanned things will happen along the route, and I prefer to be in places where people care to try to fix it. 🙂
Hi Kinda, cool story about the heat going out. Glad you didn’t freeze all the way! Sometimes when things go wrong it makes for the best memories. I had the opposite problem in the Middle East. We couldn’t turn the heat down.(and by heat I mean the SUN!)It was 120 degrees and I was cuddled up with a bag of ice in a tent trying to find some balance. I really like what your doing with travel here and I’m looking forward to seeing the TEDx vid. Take care. #dnber
Haha yes, they really do make the best stories. No one tells about the boring train ride, but everyone tells about getting on the wrong train and ending up in the wrong country!! :O but it sure is uncomfortable in the middle of it 😀
And thanks! I haven’t heard when those videos will be out, but I’ll post it when they’re released.
