City Guide to Amsterdam - top things to see Amsterdam – Friendly, Laidback, Elegant

The city has plenty of art and museums to see as well as more historic places (The Ann Frank house is located in Amsterdam, along with a very large Van Gogh museum and the Rijks museum). The main things are all in or near the city center and everything is a very walkable distance. For the most part the atmosphere of the city is very laid back, but there are plenty of options for more.

Places to See

The Ann Frank House

The actual house Ann Frank and her family stayed in and the place where her diary was written. Turned into a museum, the walk through and story is incredible. You should familiarize yourself a bit with the story of Ann Frank or read the book first as they seem to assume that you know the story prior to coming to the museum.

The Van Gogh Museum

The iamsterdam card is good here, and it is definitely worth the trip, even if you aren’t very into art. The setup is incredible and really takes you through the life of Van Gogh and his ever-evolving artistic talent.

The Red Light District

Very touristy during the day, it isn’t until night falls that the other side of Amsterdam comes out. Lots of shops and places to eat, it is definitely a happening place during the day. (Note from Travel Chicks: Although the Red Light District is one of the infamous places to see in Amsterdam, it really isn’t our style of place to visit at night. )

The Rembrandt House Museum

The house where Rembrandt lived and painted for several years, with lots of original etchings and some paintings to see, with lots of history on his life.

The Heineken Experience

See how the Dutch make their beer and learn about the Heineken’s themselves at the experience! See the Heineken horses and experience how beer is made and even taste some of the process along the way. Admission includes two glasses of Heineken beer and a special gift as well.

Places to Stay

“Shelter Jordan” and “Shelter City” are sister hostels that are very safe, very clean, and very affordable. Definitely two of the cheapest hostels in the city

Shelter Jordan – Located a bit on the outskirts near the Ann Frank Museum. It’s about a 10-minute bus ride from the city center and in a very safe area of town.  Plenty of food options from grocery store budget food to a more fast food style places (Cheapest options are going to be Turkish food or pizza places).  Quote from website: “Shelter Jordan is a no-drug and no-alcohol Christian hostel near Anne Frank House and the rest of central Amsterdam. Our guests say ‘if you’re not into partying, drugs or drinking, this is a great place for you’ …it offers a safe atmosphere and single-sex dorms on separate floors.”

Shelter City – This hostel is more centrally-located near the city center and Red Light District.

(Fun tip! If you are low on funds or looking for a place to stay a bit longer, they offer free room and food if you help clean, for up to a month! Just have to email them and see if they are in need of cleaning crews when you want to stay. They just ask for a few hours a day.)

Places to Eat

Super Budget girl right here, so I ate at a lot of grocery stores eating veggies, fruits, and sometimes they have pre-made food you just need to re heat. Other than that, the occasional kebab or coffee was my main food.
