One of my goals has always been to go to Italy and taste as any flavors of gelato as I could possibly fit in while there. Well, I’m excited to say…mission accomplished.
Last summer, as I was planning for our trip to Italy, I came across a website for the International Gelato Festival. It just happened to be in 
Florence that year, and that just happened to be on the exact weekend that Kinda and I were going to be there!
It is this amazing festival where the best gelato crafters from Europe, get together and compete for the Top Gelato Award. The festival was held at Piazzale Michelangelo, a dauntingly steep walk up steps that seemed to go on forever in 92 degree weather. (So make sure you wear great shoes.) But it was totally worth it. When we reached the top, overlooking a panoramic view of the city, we experienced the most breathtaking sunset of the trip. It would have been worth it even just for the view.
When you get to the festival, your ticket gets you a “gelato passport”. In order to vote you must have every single gelato stamped. So it began. 
We started our rounds to each contender, as they each, in turn, tried to sway with all types of smiles, sincerity, and flirtation to secure your coveted vote. So 32 flavors later, and more gelato than any one person should have in a day, we voted on our top flavor. Mine was a basil, pine nut and lemon zest. I know it sounds crazy, but it was so good! Some of the other favorites were mango with graham cracker, and a lemon blueberry.
In the end, Eugenio Morrone from “Il Cannolo Siciliano” in Rome took top prize for his mandarin, ginger, and peppermint mix.

If you missed out on last year’s festival in Italy, it’s not too late to hop a plane to their next destination….Hamburg, Germany July 28th-30th for the semi-finals. The final will be held once more in Florence, at the Piazzale Michelangelo, September 14th-17th. This year promises to be just as delicious! It’s time to check off that bucket list.
