We couldn’t leave Paris without visiting the famous Palace and Gardens of Versailles, just twelve miles outside of the city, and enjoying a picnic lunch there. Versailles, also known as Château de Versailles, is breathtaking – the royal family lived there in the 1600’s and 1700’s, and it was a political hub of sorts.
When we walked through the front gates of Versailles, we got a pleasant surprise – free visits into the garden that day! We had been prepared to pay, but we gladly spent the money on ice cream instead. (NOTE: If you have a Eurail pass, get free entrance!)

The entire visit to the palace gave us a glimpse into what royal life must have been like. Pride and Prejudice and every other movie with grand estates flashed through our minds. It was spectacular grandeur come to life! What did one do with so many rooms, anyway?
The garden was just as astounding – 800 hectares of land (which is apparently 8,000,000 square meters…you do the math). The garden stretched as far as you could see with rows of hedges and mazes. There were statues everywhere, which we gladly posed with. The garden even included a small lake with paddle boats.
Kinda: I got a little anxious just looking at all of the hedges. They must work around the clock every single day to keep it all up. I don’t know how they do it. I can’t even keep the small plants in my front yard pruned.
Picnic at the Garden of Versailles
We had stopped by the grocery store before the trip and packed a picnic lunch of sandwiches and Nutella. Grocery-store picnics are a great way to try local food at an affordable price. Plus, it’s on our Overseas Checklist Challenge for every trip.
Most of the girls decided to take the palace tour, and Kinda stayed outside to watch everyone’s shopping bags. You’ll have to watch the video for what happened next.
Kinda: I was tired, okay? It had been a long day. I love my friends, but they’re terrible sometimes 😉
- If you’re traveling on a Eurail pass – even a flex ppass, make sure to mention that. And bring your pass with you for proof. You get free entrance to Versailles!
- Pack a picnic and eat in the beautiful gardens.
