Filming Aboriginal Artists in Outback Australia

travel photography in Darwin AustraliaToday’s blog is a guest post written by award-winning filmmaker, Cassie De Colling.

I was recently commissioned to shoot a short documentary for a group of aboriginal artists in the the Northern Territory in Australia. The artists were from the small community of Peppimentari, 350km southwest of Darwin. We set out on a journey to Yilan, 950km east  of Darwin, where the artists attended a weaving workshop to relearn their ancient weaving techniques.

For those familiar with the Northern Territory, you know that it’s about the same size as France, and unless you’re flying in a helicopter, it takes a long, long, long time to get anywhere.

My job was to film the expedition and document the weaving techniques so that the artists would be able to use the video as a reference once they got back home to Peppimentari.

Here are a few tips for travel  / work in the Northern Territory or anywhere hot and humid:

  1.  Never go on any trip thinking it will be a good time to give up coffee.
  2. Never underestimate the power of insect repellent. Make sure you pack twice as much as what you think you need.
  3. Have somewhere waterproof for your camera gear and laptop. You never know when a monsoon is going to hit.
  4. Get the right insurance that covers you and your gear. Triple check that it covers you no matter where you are and what you’re doing.
  5. Keep up salts and sugar. Because you’re sweating all day your body needs as much as it can get.
  6. Be considerate of culture. In Arnhem Land dressing modestly is part of the culture. So no matter how hot it is, your shorts / skirt should be at least knee length.
  7. Your phone won’t work outside of any big city. So make sure you update your voicemail.
  8. I always travel with an Australian power board, which means I can always charge my electronics once.
  9. Never take film / photos of sacred sites without prior permission or consent.
