Go for the Gator Meat – Making the Most of International Cuisine

Picture of unusual international food

Try something new. You never know until you do!

As I looked at the unusual food placed in front of me, I realized IT WAS NOW OR NEVER. I had seen everything from grub kabobs to alligator meat, but this was something completely different.

I was staying at a tiny little bed and breakfast in the middle of Ireland. The owner, in his jovial voice and way-too-chipper morning personality, had confidently placed the plate in front of me. He looked at me expectantly, as if he were serving the most precious thing on the planet and it would be a travesty to humanity if I didn’t love it. I didn’t have the heart to refuse.

Hesitantly, I put my fork in the blackish-red mystery placed in front of me by the Bed and Breakfast owner and took a bite.

Not as bad as I thought, but the rest of the beloved Irish specialty, blood pudding (even the name sounds gross), was going to the little bulldog at my feet.

She seemed to appreciate its flavor much more than I did.

Why go for the gator meat

Traveling overseas, you will often find yourself with the opportunity to experience some local cuisine. My advice? Go for it! You may only be there once, so embrace the moment and take in the full experience.

Over my travels I have tried a plethora of delicious, odd, and sometimes disgusting foods: alligator meat in Peru, grub kabobs in Nicaragua, blood pudding in Ireland, caviar crepes in Sweden, fish and chips with smashed peas in London, and goat “burgers” in Africa.

Though each meal was ordered with trepidation, the fun and experience of trying something new was worth it!

So, next time you have the opportunity to order alligator meat “nuggets” or the “American” burger, take a risk and go for the gator!
