We’ve figured out the perfect solution to travel light and still have room to bring stuff home. It’s this: buy cheap luggage at the grocery store.

Let us explain. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about traveling, it’s to pack light. So we often travel with only one backpack and one daypack. It works great trekking across a town or running to catch a bus.

But what happens when we buy way too much wine and pottery and don’t have room to carry it back home? Well we need more luggage, of course. But who wants to spend money on a bunch of extra luggage? Not us.

We figured out a solution to our problem when we were in a store in Ireland. We had gotten a little out of control when shopping at street markets, and we had picked up everything from pottery to paintings (seriously). We had no idea how we would get it all home.

Then we went through the checkout lane at a department/grocery store and there it was: a stack of very large mesh bags with handles for one Euro each. Now these bags wouldn’t have been great for hauling stuff around the entire trip. But they were perfect for taking stuff home.

(When traveling overseas you are allowed at least one checked bag, a carry-on, and a “personal item” – aka something very similar to a carry-on, but supposedly smaller).

So here is what we do:

1. Travel during trip with a backpack and daypack
2. At end of trip, buy a cheap, durable bag at a department or grocery store (about 1 Euro each)
3. Check the backpack on the trip back
4. Use the daypack as a carry-on and the mesh bag as a personal item on the plane

Now, granted, you will be carrying a department store bag through an airport. But it’s a small price to pay (haha literally) to bring all of your goodies home.
