I posted this to Facebook on a cold, February morning. My girlfriends and I were sitting in Porta Nuova train station after a few whirlwind hours exploring fair Verona.
After seeing Letters to Juliet, visiting this northern Italian town rocketed to the top of my to-do list during my semester abroad. I was convinced that Amanda Seyfried’s make-believe experience would come true for me, too.
It was 4AM back in Texas, so I wasn’t expecting many comments — but one from a friend also studying abroad in Italy made my grogginess disappear.

So now there was an actual possibility that a hot British blonde man would appear and whisk me off to enjoy the Italian countryside. I side-eyed my friends and considered that fantasy. Having taken the overnight commuter train up from Rome, we were a hot mess.
Upon our arrival, I had groggily scratched my letter to Juliet on the back of wrinkled piece of paper with a borrowed pen. Normally, it makes me grumpy to think about my lack of a love-life, and having to explain the situation to a fictional teenager at 5:30am in a cold train station only made it worse.
I didn’t put as much effort into my note as I would’ve liked to, because I didn’t think anyone would read it, let alone reply…but I was soooo wrong, and very glad I was!

There is a small gift shop on the back wall (not seen in the movie, obviously) and there is a fee to stand on “Juliet’s balcony,” but I would skip it. The real fun is seeing where the movie was filmed and saying “wherefore art thou Romeo” to the cute Italian security guards.

Unlike the movie, all letters to Juliet go in a small mailbox near the front entrance, not into the wall. You don’t need a stamp, but make sure you include your return address even if it’s just scribbled on the letter.

After leaving my letter, I wanted to wait around to see if one of Juliet’s secretaries was going to come back and pick it up, but I was hauled off because my friends wanted to see a little bit more of the city before heading over to Venice. We were only doing a day trip to Verona, and the clock was ticking.
I kind of forgot about my letter. After a month or two, I figured that Juliet doesn’t really write back.
But the Italian postal system is notoriously slow, and Juliet has a lot of mail to attend to, so be patient.It took five months to receive my reply, but the hand written note was worth the wait!

I didn’t pay for postage on my letter! I dropped it off in Verona, and “Juliet” paid to mail my reply. If you simply mail a letter over to her instead of visiting, you would need to pay for postage for it to get there…but there is no need to include postage for the return.

Hi Gabby! Well postage would depend on weight. A postcard or a standard-sized letter would run about $1.15 (that’s up to a few sheets of paper, non-rigid, etc). So not too expensive at all! You’d want to mail it at your post office to make sure everything is stamped correctly.
