Fantasy Destinations
I’d like to begin by saying this list is in no particular order. Creating this list was really difficult—the reality of being a geek girl is that I can pretty much think of ten (or more) locations in each fandom I would love to visit. I decided that the destinations for this list had to have excellent weather and plenty of things to do and see for a good adventure! So without further ado, I present The Top 10 Places Geek Girls Would Love to Visit (if they were real).
The 10 Places Geek Girls Would Love to Visit (if they were real)
Star Wars
With a new film set to release this December, fans across the world are eager to visit new worlds and return to classic favorites in a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars offers a vibrant variety of travel locations in both the canon universe and from Star Wars Legends (previously known as the Expanded Universe). For the purpose of this list, I’ve decided to go with a canon world, Naboo.
Location | Lake Country, Naboo. |
Coordinates | Mid Rim, Chommell Sector, Naboo System. 0-17. |

Just about anyone would love to visit Lake Country on Naboo, the home planet of Padmé Amidala. This famous point of interest features beautiful rolling hills, serene waters, and gorgeous resorts. You can take leisurely boat rides, refreshing swims, or have a picnic out in the meadow. Lake Country can be viewed in Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones. The next best place to visit here on Earth is Lake Como, Italy—the location where the Lake Country scenes were filmed.
Star Trek
Star Trek, another fandom revived by J.J. Abrams, has often inspired people of all kinds to look to the stars and go where no one has gone before. While being faced with beautiful and terrifying experiences while exploring deep space, the characters of the series are often faced with moral dilemmas and conflicts that test their altruistic values. The beauty of Star Trek is that the franchise was about more than interstellar travel, but the series explored what it was to be truly human, humble, and empathetic. One of the more fun and relaxing planets in Star Trek is Risa, a paradise destination.
Location | Suraya Bay, Risa. M-Class Planet. |
Coordinates | Risa System, Risa Sector, Beta Quadrant. |
Originally, Risa was riddled with rain and geologically unstable. It was plagued by horrible earthquakes, but the natives created a weather control network that provides nearly constant desirable weather and seismic regulation for optimum comfort. Risa is best known for beautiful tropical resorts and pristine beaches. Risa is one of the most serene locales you can see in Star Trek.
Final Fantasy X
The Final Fantasy series has a plethora of amazing places to visit and explore. Each game offers its own rich and intricate world with long lists of fantastic travel destinations. While it will be nice to re-visit cities like Midgar in the upcoming revamp of Final Fantasy VII, I decided to choose a romantic spot from Final Fantasy X.
Location | Lake Macalania. |
Coordinates | Macalania Wood, Spira |
Lake Macalania is a beautiful frozen lake located in the heart of Macalania Wood. Macalania Temple, an ice palace, sits atop the frozen water. Anyone seeking to retrace the steps of Summoner Yuna and her guardians will enjoy this exotic locale, known for the iconic Macalania Spring cutscene.
Lord of the Rings
It’s not like you can have a must-travel-to fantasy list and not have something Lord of the Rings on there. This is the most epic hike you will ever watch or read about in any fandom ever. Lord of the Rings pushes your imagination, explores the values of loyalty, friendship, honor, nobility, family, brotherhood, and more. With fantastic highs and devastating lows, this series hits on the essence of struggle for the greater good. The bonus is that it has an unmatched cast and breathtaking scenery!
Location | Rivendell, Middle Earth |
Coordinates | West of the Misty Mountains |
Of all the beauties located in Middle Earth, Rivendell is quite the gem. Tucked away in a valley, this peaceful forest is home of the elves and Elrond, son of Eärendil and Elwing. Time seems to stand still here under the spell of Elrond’s ring of power. If you’re looking for a real-life vacation spot similar to Rivendell, set your sights on Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
Marvel’s Avengers
Yet another Disney franchise on the list, Marvel has a strong set of superheros that the world loves. While several of the films take place on Earth, the banishment of Thor introduced a larger universe to cinema fans.
Location | Asgard, Home of the gods. |
Coordinates | First of the Nine Realms |
Asgard is the birthright of the famous Avenger, Thor. This grand city is home to the superhuman race, the Asgardians. Based on Norse mythology, Asgard features astounding Art Deco/Sci-fi architecture with fantasy themes throughout. After great battles, Asgardians throw grand feasts. Along with the breathtaking landscape, these festivals make Asgard one of the most exciting locations in Marvel’s Avengers series.
Legend of Zelda
No, that handsome lad in green is not Zelda, he’s Link! It seems like every time Hyrule is revisited in the Legend of Zelda franchise, there is always something new with just enough of the old for bittersweet nostalgia. While there are plenty of exotic and exciting environments in the games, I decided to choose a location where you are least likely to lose hearts.
Location | Hyrule Castle Town |
Coordinates | Lanayru Province, Hyrule |
If you’re a Legend of Zelda fan, Castle Town should be on your must see list. Aside from being better than the water dungeon any day, Castle Town features a bustling market, interesting people, fun games, and, of course, Hyrule Castle, home of the famously pensive Princess Zelda. Visitors should make time to bug watch at Agitha’s Castle, pick up a mask at the Happy Mask Shop, enjoy stories from patrons at Telma’s Bar, and visit the palace.
Elder Scrolls
Oh, there is hardly a place as distracting as Tamriel. You can find adventure, treasures, monsters, and mysteries around every bend. Picking a single place is hard, nay impossible, for this amazing game. So I settled for someplace easy to get to that I’d love to spend a week or two exploring…if it were real.
Location | Vulkhel Guard |
Coordinates | Summerset Isles, Auridon |
Yes, Elder Scrolls boasts magnificent scenery in every corner of it’s map, but let’s face it, Auridon is gorgeous. The landscape ranges drastically from beaches, to ragged cliffs, and bountiful forests. An easy to reach location is Vulkhel Guard, one of the three largest cities in Auridon. You can enjoy the clear waters at the beach, shop at the large market place, or enjoy a picnic with your bestie under the flowering trees.
Doctor Who
Travelling to exotic locales is pretty easy when you’ve got a TARDIS to get you around. This long running British sci-fi show has featured plenty of different locales in the course of its existence.
Location | Midnight |
Coordinates | Leisure Planet, Xion System. |
You know what they say, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. So what’s better than an entire diamond planet? Although Midnight has no atmosphere, that has not stopped people from making Midnight a tourist sight-seeing destination. You can relax at the spa, enjoy a meal at an anti-gravity restaurant, or you can see the Sapphire Waterfall.
Super Mario Bros.
Each edition of the Super Mario games features an amazing number of levels. Much like Nintendo’s famous Legend of Zelda series, Mario tends to visit new places, but also new renditions of original ones. The one thing that never seems to change? Princess Peach is never in the right castle. You’d think after all these years, Mario would go to the castle he would visit last. Oh well, I can think of one castle I would love to visit….
Location | Princess Peach’s Castle |
Coordinates | Toad Town, The Mushroom Kingdom |
Princess Peach’s Castle is a must see for any Nintendo fan. While the interior varies from game to game, most Mario games boast the iconic castle with the lovely stained glass window of Mario’s crush, Princess Peach. Situated peacefully among rolling hills, Princess Peach’s Castle has lovely water features, beautiful gardens, and an art collection to die for. Also, where else can you meet Yoshi on a roof and go flying with a winged cap? That’s right, nowhere else.
Forgotten Realms
There really isn’t anything quite as expansive as the Forgotten Realms. For years fans have made their stories legend in this Dungeons and Dragons universe, adding to an already long list of fantastic tales written by the authors. There are so many great locations to choose from, and almost all of them are made more or less of a great vacation spot depending on what period of time you choose. For this list, I’m going with pre-spellplague, thank you very much.
Location | Neverwinter |
Coordinates | Sword Coast North, Northwest Faerûn |
Neverwinter, a massive sprawling city, is called the Jewel of the North. So why is it called Neverwinter if the city is the north, you ask? Well, fire elementals that reside in Mount Hotenow heat the waters of Neverwinter River, so a comfortable, warm climate is achieved in the area. Guided by justice and fairness, Neverwinter is a picturesque city with intricate infrastructure, grand architecture, and markets full of well-crafted fine artworks.
Keep exploring!
