Bath Time: Top Things to Do in the UK’s Cleanest City

My mom spent one glorious day in Bath, England, in the 1980’s, so I decided to do the same. While 24 hours in the city is certainly enough time to experience its highlights, it really doesn’t feel like enough time. I was sad to leave, and felt like I could’ve walked its beige streets forever.  I’ve listed my favorite things to do in Bath, UK, below:

1) Sally Lunn’sSoup, salad and salmon on a roll

I was so impressed with this gem that I ate there twice in 24 hours! They have sweet and savory “buns,” and the prices are reasonable — I had a huge lunch for thirteen pounds. The “sweetest bun in Bath” I mentioned in my first post? This is where it is.

A tip: they have free wifi and its coverage extends well into the street. If you need to check anything while in town, this is a good place to do it.Your receipt also covers entrance to a small yet worthwhile “kitchen museum” in the basement.

I  took this 90-minute comedy walk on a whim. It begins near Sally Lunn’s, and its bright purple sign really caught my eye. I thought, “Tour Bath with a laugh? Why not!” It’s cheap, only 5 pounds for students and 8 for everyone else, and worth every bit.

Their website says “you’ll laugh yourself silly” and it’s absolutely correct.  I had almost developed a six-pack by the end of it from laughing so hard. There were a couple of times when I could hardly even breathe. It’s a great night-cap, and the route is quite central, so getting back to most hotels and hostels is not more than a seven-minute walk.

3) Jane Austen CentreHolding a cup of tea, with sandwiches on the table

If you like Jane Austen, which if you’re in Bath there’s a great chance that you do, then this is the place to go. The small museum is chock-full of Austen history, and helps you understand what the city was like when she ( and her characters!) lived there. Skip tea at the Pump Room and have it at the Centre! The waitresses are dressed in Regency-era garb, and the quaint atmosphere fosters great conversation.

Posing in front of the Royal Crescent

Yes, this company is based in America, but their fudge is a must-try! So grab one of their delicious creations and head up the hill to the Royal Crescent. Its signature Georgian architecture has been featured in many BBC films, and as you arrive, you’ll understand why. The area directly below it now functions as a public park. It’s a great place to people watch, and take in the relaxing atmosphere of the city.

5) Roman Baths

Spend at least two hours here! If you have a student ID or visa, show it for a discount — because when you’re paying in pounds, every discount matters! The ticket comes with an audio guide, but it’s often lengthy and boring. Opt for the kids tour instead. It’s told by a number of Roman characters and makes the trip more engaging. Visit in the morning to avoid crowds, and make sure to try some of the famous Bath water on your way out! It’s said to have healing powers, but its taste is definitely….unique.

I opted to go window shopping and explore the parks around the river, but if you want to do as the Romans did, check out the modern version of the famous spa here!
