Where in the World is our Intern?- Portugal

“If you’re not living on the edge you’re taking up too much space.”

― Stephen Hunt

I recently visited the edge of the world. I am also happy to report I have not fallen off the face of the earth.  For the past two weeks I have been lucky enough to travel to four different countries having incredible adventures. I look forward to sharing my journey from the edge of the world to the beginning modern civilization with you.

I’ll begin at the end (of the world) in Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal.

Where to Stay

As a group of college students, we wanted to stay closest to the most ‘happening’ night life and beaches. Albufeira was a perfect choice. The “strip” has many options for popular, fun bars and clubs. I suggest Ale-Hop Hostel for its proximity to famous beaches (see below), the social scene, and historical city center.

Albufeira is just a one hour bus ride to Lagos, the “number one travel destination” on Trip Advisor’s list of 15 destinations on the rise worldwide.  In addition to being home to several tourist destinations and beautiful beaches, Lagos is the historic center of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. Buses from Albufeira to Lagos run regularly on weekdays and less frequently on weekends. Fare is around $7.50 each way.

Boats, Beaches, and Beautiful Views

Speed Boats and Pirate Ships

For a ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat, literally, I suggest taking a Dream Waves speed boat adventure. We took the Insonia for an hour along the coast to discover the nature rock formations and grottos. The high speed turns and jumps through the waves reminded me of a fantastic roller coaster ride. My friends and I were screaming and laughing the whole time.

Following the wild ride, we were lucky enough to see two bottled nose dolphins jumping just 100 feet from the boat.  Next, we transferred boats for a relaxing pirate ship cruise, and a very chilly swim in the Atlantic Ocean. A little bit about me, dolphins are my favorite animal, and Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite movie. Needless to say seeing wild dolphins and sailing a pirate ship in the same day left me a very happy camper.

Boat excursions run out of the Albufeira Marina, just a 20 walk from the Ale-Hop Hostel.

Quick List: Beaches of the Algarve

Dos Pescadores Beach

Stretching 1.3 miles along the coast of old town Albufeira this beach is perfect for both the tranquil and active traveler.  Relax on the white power sand, or browse the nearby shops. Volleyball courts are available as well

as various water sporting options. My friends and I elected to make our own fun and tried body surfing. If you catch the wave just right, you can ride the edge all the way to shore.

Dona Ana Beach

This beach is situated between two cliffs. Located in Lagos, it is classified as one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. I have to agree. The sand is fine, golden and great for sea shell collecting. The water is crystal clear and calm. Surrounding caves can be explored by small fishing boat or if you dare, swimming.

Beautiful Views: Cabo San Vicente

This southwestern most point of Portugal was thought to be the edge of the world before age of exploration. The cliffs drop at a 90 degree angle to the Atlantic below. Again I was reminded of my favorite movie. I couldn’t help but look out over the ocean horizon and think, “This is where they rescued Captain Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones’ Locker.”

To add to your Bucket ListBucket list item watch the sunset at the end of the world

Cabo San Vicente was considered a magical place by the Romans. I agree. The sunset is much larger here than anywhere else in the world. The sun sinks into the earth as if it is actually falling off the edge. Words cannot do it justice; I suggest you add watching the sunset at the end of the world to your travel bucket list and see for yourself.

I left Portugal with many great memories and one valuable life lesson: Sometimes the most happiness comes from sitting on the edge of my seat, riding the edge of a wave, or standing on the edge of the world. Don’t be afraid to take a step closer to the edge, it might just be a step towards a great adventure.
